To earth or not to earth?

My husband, daughter and I just returned from a trip to Cebu, Philippines, to celebrate our two-year wedding anniversary. We literally spent the week glued to mother nature- we laid on the sand, walked in the grass and swam in the sea. I must report that even though we were up at the crack of dawn and chasing around our toddler until nightfall, I feel more rested than I have in months. As corny as this might sound, I thank mother earth for this needed revitalization  as it is her energy that has rejuvenated and balanced mine.

This practice, termed Earthing, has become one of the most important habitual  actions I take to balance my body and calm my spirit. Every time I travel I seek out an earthing spot as it diminishes jet lag and gives me the sense of being plugged-in to my new surroundings. It doesn’t hurt to mention that it is 100% free too.

Dave Asprey, The Bulletproof Executive, explains that, “our bodies develop a positive charge that is slowly dispelled when we touch the earth.  The earth itself has negatively charged electrons that balance the positive charge we accumulate when we’re disconnected, which happens because we are almost always electrically insulated from the surface of the planet.  Over time this positive charge builds up, depletes our energy, and promotes inflammation and disease.”

Earthing is not something new. People have been walking, eating, and sleeping on the bare ground for thousands upon thousands of years. In today’s fast-paced, modern world, many of us have become quite disconnected from the earth, moving about on paved sidewalks, streets and escalators. Even when we “hit the trail” our feet are clothed in materials that protect and  therefore separate us from the ground. Also, for those of us that live in cities, finding patches of real green grass or sandy terrain takes even that much more dedication.

If you do some googling on Earthing you will find articles which prove a bit of science behind Earthing as well as Quackwatch warnings against it. As with anything, you must find what feels right for you and go with it. I myself am completely on board and will continue to Earth at every given opportunity.
